Job 4: Packing Pears

Once I got the apple packing down pat pears all of a sudden started coming out of the conveyor belt. I originally didn't even know they had pears on the orchard. The difference with the pears is that they get weighted while packing instead of having trays. They don't float like apples so they never actually get washed. Because of this they are put manually into the grater, one by one. All I have to say is wash your fruit...and really think twice before drinking apple juice as that is where all of the rotten apples go!

We pack the brune barnes pear and also have the red pear on the orchard. I never realized how many different varieties of fruit there are. I have packed all kinds of apples like pink lady, granny smith, royal gala, golden delicious, red delicious, fuji, and jonagold. I learnt there are over 300 different varieties of apples. A farm down the street used to have a tree with almost 300 different varieites on it by grafting the tree (when you add branches from one variety on to another, you can have multiple different kinds on one tree). I've packed some bags full of goodies for friends too, it's a luxury to bring them home!
