Aus Slang

 

So after being around these Aussie's for awhile, I've come to realized all you need to know about speaking and understanding Aus is this simple rule: Shorten words and add either 'ie' or 'o' to any word and you've got it! Here's a list or examples to start you off.

Abreviation Words

 

moquito - mozzie

awesome - Ggouse

dock - wharf/jetty

dinner - tea

trunk - boot

truck - ute (stands for utility vehicle) or bus

peppers - capsicum

french fries - chips/hot chips

ketchup - tomato sauce

cottage - shack

liquir store - bottle shop/ bottlo

30 pack of beer - block

stole - floged

bangs - fringe

stroller - pram

tire - tyre

out for dinner - countertop meal

parking lot - carpark

comforter - doona

afternoon - arvo

break - smoko

lumberjack - wood spliter

food - tucker

grandpa - pop

puke - spew

sweater - jumper

gas station - patrol/fuel station

two weeks/bi-weekly - fort nightly

think - reckon

good idea - keen

cotton candy - fairy flause

diaper - nappy

candy - lolly

tar - bitaman

ground beef - mince

field - paddock

washroom - toilet

garbage - rubbish

dump - tip

street kid - bogan

tired - buggared

sex - root

schedule - rooster

 

 

 

Aus Sayings

 

that's cool - cool as

how are you? - how ya goin?

good morning - g'day mate

your welcome - no worries, that's okay

what are you trying to find? - what are you after?

 

Different Items

 

cordial - a syrup you mix in with water, like Crystal Light

fly spray - literally everyone uses it to kill flys. And we're still using fly swatters!

Vegemite - a vegetable based spread that you put on toast, has to be put on in small portions tho, and with butter

Milo - pretty much what they use instead of Nesquick, except it's disgusting

 

 

Just Different

 

monkey in the middle - piggy in the middle

Humpty Dumpty is an egg not a potato

The brand Axe is called Lynx, GMC is Holden, and Lays are Smiths

 

 

 

 

 

Aus Vocabulary

 

person - bloke

After being here for only 6 months and coming back to this list I had started right when I got here, I've already started thinking, "Really, I didn't know that word before?" I can only imagine what I will sound like when I come home and how many of these words will stick!
