Job 2: Picking up Spuds

Thank God I wasn't put back out on the caulies today! I can barely move because of the back pain, I wouldn't have been much use to them anyway. Today I was sent to a potato paddock, aka 'spuds'. My group & I working with a wife and husband who own the farm and have been supplying to the local company Simplot for years. At Simplot they mass produce frozen fries aka 'chips' to major fast food companies like McDonald's and KFC.

The husband would go around and lift the spuds up from the ground with his tractor and then we would go and pick them up and put them in a bin. Pretty simple work however still hard on the lower back (there are much easier ways of doing this however this farm was just small). We were told to take home a few spuds as a reward for our hard day at work. I took 4 massive spuds- never have seen them this big before! The grocery stores turn them down when they are this big because ppl don't often like cooking with them. I also found out the man who owned this paddock was technically how I heard about the job... and a long chain of other ppl. Tassie is a small place where word of mouth and knowing the right ppl will get you places!
